Different stages of house construction

Building Construction

House construction takes time and capital so taking informed decisions is important. There are many important stages of construction. Here are different construction stages that you should know about:

1. Sub Structure Construction: This mainly includes the foundation of the house, walls and columns made below the house. Some houses also have a basement for storage or for parking, the basement is also included in sub structure construction. Making a strong substructure is very important because this part provides support to the entire structure and helps in distributing building loads.

2. Plinth level structure: Plinth is the part of superstructure which differentiate it from substructure. It lies immediately above the surrounding ground. Plinth height protects the superstructure from dampness because the top of the plinth is made damp proof.

3. Superstructure: It is the above structure formed on the existing base line. Superstructure serves the purpose for which the construction is intended for. During monsoon season sand, cement and other materials should be properly covered because rain water may decrease the quality of the material.

4. Masonry construction: It mainly includes laying individual masonry units like bricks, concrete blocks using cement mortar to adhere each piece. This entire process is labour intensive as this step will make the outlay of the entire home.

5. Electrical and plumbing: This step can be carried out during any time of the year. Here the electricity line and plumbing pipes and many more are fitted in the Home. It takes around 6-8 days to complete the fittings for a 1000 sq ft house.

6. Plaster application: This layer provides the finished damp-proof smooth surface. Plaster is applied over the masonry construction to enhance its outer appearance. This process helps in protecting the surface from atmospheric influences and also to cover defective masonry workmanship.

7. Water proofing: This step creates an impervious layer in the bathroom, roof, toilets, balcony, water tanks etc to prevent any kind of water penetration into the masonry construction. During the final finish, waterproofing helps in making the house durable and sustainable. If it is not done properly then it may affect the wall paint/ plaster so using the quality material for proofing is important.

8. Floor and tiling: Permanent covering the floor is called flooring. It is done using tiles, marble etc. Tiling is the process of placing tiles over floor, walls or other spaces. This step enhances the beauty of the house. There are many types of tiles available in the market and can be chosen according to the aesthetic sense of the House. Choosing the right and durable material is very important as it supports the loads placed over it.
